Tractor Mowers: More Time to Watch the Grass Grow

After a long winter season, it is finally time to get to work outside and now may also be the perfect time of year to get the equipment you’ve always wanted (or needed).

The tractor is built for heavy-duty work. Designed for heavy loads and rough terrain. One of the biggest draws of the tractor for people with large properties are the mower deck attachments that are powerful, efficient, and can provide a well-groomed field of grass.

But not all mower attachments are alike. Let’s go over the four main types of tractor mower attachments we carry so you can choose the right mower to suit your need and get the job done.

Rotary Mower

Perfect for mowing tall grass, weeds, and brush. Consisting of one or more mower blades which rotate perpendicular to the surface being cut, the blades cut and tear vegetation as they spin. Rotary mowers are mounted behind the tractor and carry the nickname “brush hog” due to their ability to cut through thicker vegetation with ease.

Finish Mower

These mower decks are the perfect way to mow lawns and other grassy areas for a clean park like finish. A type of rotary mower, finishing mowers use a lower cutting height than general rotary decks that may be equipped with bagging systems or discharge chutes to control the disposal of the cut grass. Described as economical and easy to use, they are the preferred decks for providing a neat and trim plot of grass.

Flail Mower

Offering great mowing and mulching for tall grass, weeds, and small brush. But unlike a rotary deck, (which uses spinning blades) a flail mower uses a series of small chains or metal knives (the flails) mounted to a fast-rotating shaft. The advantage found with a flail mower is that they are less likely to throw debris than a rotary mower, which makes them ideal choices for roadside or municipal work that takes place near people and vehicles. Also, properly equipped flail mowers can handle wet and thick vegetation, including crop debris or small tree limbs.

Mid Mount Mower

Great for cutting just grass on large properties. The mower deck is mounted beneath the tractor between the front and rear axles (think heavy duty riding lawnmower). Using the same concept as a rotary deck mower but usually with two blades providing a wider cutting area for tackling larger grassy areas. Intended to only cut grass, not thick vegetation or debris.
